Materials Needed
- 10–20 small pony toys, counters, or paper pony cutouts
- Number cards from 0 to 20
- Two small bowls, cups, or “pony stables”
- Pencil, crayons, and paper

Lesson Length

Introduction: Pony Party Hook
Adult says: “The ponies are having a party! Some ponies are already at the party, and more ponies are coming. Then some ponies may go home. Can you help us keep track of the ponies?”
Place 3 pony toys or counters in front of the learner. Add 2 more.
Ask:
- “How many ponies were here at the beginning?”
- “How many more came?”
- “How many ponies are here now?”
Tell the learner: “Today we will learn that addition means putting groups together, and subtraction means taking some away.”

- “The number sentence is 4 + 3 = 7.”
Point to each part of the number sentence and explain:
4 is the first group, + means add, 3 is the group we add, and 7 is the total.

Place 8 ponies in front of the learner. Move 3 ponies to the side.
Say each step aloud:
- “I start with 8 ponies.”
- “Three ponies go home.”
- “I take 3 away.”
- “Now I count the ponies left: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.”
- “The number sentence is 8 − 3 = 5.”
