Encephalitis

Rabies

Hydrophobia
Hydrophobia** literally means “fear of water.” In rabies, the word refers to painful spasms or difficulty swallowing that can occur when a person tries to drink. It does not mean that the person is simply scared of taking a bath. Rabies can also cause confusion, agitation, hallucinations, and unusual behavior.
Furious Rabies
Furious is a word sometimes used to describe a form of rabies involving agitation, restlessness, confusion, and aggressive behavior. This may sound like a movie zombie, but rabies does not create a person who has died and returned to life. It is a life-threatening infection that requires urgent medical attention.

Kuru was a rare prion disease identified among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea. It was connected with historical mortuary practices that have since ended. Kuru caused problems with coordination, shaking, difficulty walking, and progressive neurological damage.
Mad Cow Disease
Mad cow disease is the common name for bovine spongiform encephalopathy, a prion disease in cattle. A related human disease is called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The word “mad” describes unusual behavior in affected cattle; it does not mean the animals became violent movie monsters.
Nucleic Acids
Nucleic acids are molecules such as DNA and RNA that store or help use genetic information. Viruses contain nucleic acids, but prions do not. This distinction helps scientists classify different disease-causing agents.

Tapeworms are real parasites, but ordinary intestinal tapeworm infections do not turn people into aggressive undead creatures. Some parasite infections can affect the nervous system, but their symptoms and life cycles are very different from those shown in zombie stories.

CIP usually means congenital insensitivity to pain. It is a rare condition in which a person is born unable to feel normal physical pain. Pain is an important warning system, so people with CIP can suffer serious injuries without realizing it. CIP does not make someone violent, emotionless, or undead.
Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. It can cause a fast heartbeat, sweating, shakiness, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, and weight loss. These symptoms might look dramatic in fiction, but hyperthyroidism is not a zombie condition.
The Word “Dumb”
Historically, dumb was sometimes used to mean unable to speak. Today, using “dumb” to describe a person is often insulting and inaccurate. It is better to say “unable to speak,” “non-speaking,” or “has difficulty producing speech,” depending on the situation.
Medical Language Matters
Zombie stories often combine unrelated symptoms: aggression, silence, lack of pain, confusion, and hunger. Real conditions usually have specific causes and patterns. Using accurate language helps us avoid stereotypes and misunderstandings about people with medical conditions.
