Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of Earth Science as it relates to Zoology.
Materials and Prep
- Pen and paper
- Access to the internet or reference books
- Prior knowledge of basic biology and zoology
Activities
-
Research and create a list of at least five different ecosystems found on Earth.
-
Choose one of the ecosystems from your list and create a food chain or food web showing the interactions between different organisms within that ecosystem.
-
Write a short paragraph explaining the importance of biodiversity within an ecosystem and how it contributes to the overall health and balance of the environment.
-
Choose an animal species that you find interesting and research its habitat, diet, and any adaptations it has developed to survive in its environment. Write a short report summarizing your findings.
Seventh Grade Talking Points
- "Earth Science is the study of the Earth's physical components and processes, including the study of ecosystems and their interactions."
- "Ecosystems are communities of living organisms and their physical environment. They can be as small as a pond or as large as a forest."
- "Biodiversity refers to the variety of different species of plants, animals, and microorganisms within an ecosystem."
- "A food chain shows the transfer of energy from one organism to another, while a food web represents the complex network of interconnected food chains within an ecosystem."
- "Adaptations are special characteristics or behaviors that help an organism survive and thrive in its specific habitat."
