Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe basic shapes found in autumn objects and scenes.
Materials and Prep
- Fall-themed pictures or objects (leaves, pumpkins, acorns, etc.)
- Whiteboard or large paper
- Markers or crayons
Activities
- Introduction: Show the fall-themed pictures or objects to the student and discuss what they see. Ask questions like "What shapes do you notice in these pictures?" or "Can you find any circles or squares?"
- Shape Hunt: Take a walk outside and look for shapes in nature. Encourage the student to find leaves, acorns, or other objects that resemble basic shapes. Have them point out and name the shapes they find.
- Shape Sorting: Use the whiteboard or large paper to draw different shapes. Cut out the fall-themed pictures or objects and have the student sort them onto the corresponding shape. For example, place a picture of a leaf on the drawing of a circle.
- Shape Art: Give the student markers or crayons and have them create their own fall-themed artwork using different shapes. Encourage them to be creative and use a variety of shapes to represent autumn objects.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "In autumn, we can see many different shapes in nature and objects around us."
- "Shapes are everywhere! Let's see if we can find circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles in our fall pictures or objects."
- "When we go outside, we can look for leaves, acorns, and other things that have shapes. Can you find any circles, squares, or triangles?"
- "Now, let's sort the fall pictures or objects onto the correct shape. Can you match the leaf to the circle?"
- "Great job! Now it's time to create your own fall artwork using different shapes. What shapes do you want to use for your picture?"
