Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe attributes of different shapes using attribute blocks.

Materials and Prep

  • Attribute blocks set
  • Pen or pencil
  • Paper or notebook

Activities

  1. Introduction to Attribute Blocks

Start by showing the attribute blocks set to the student. Explain that attribute blocks are special shapes with different colors, sizes, and thicknesses.

Ask the student to observe the attribute blocks and identify their different attributes. Discuss the attributes together, emphasizing color, size, and thickness.

  2. Sorting Attribute Blocks

Ask the student to sort the attribute blocks based on their attributes. For example, they can create groups of blocks with the same color, same size, or same thickness.

Encourage the student to explain their sorting choices and discuss their reasoning.

  3. Creating Attribute Block Patterns

Challenge the student to create patterns using the attribute blocks. For example, they can create a pattern by alternating colors or by arranging blocks in a specific order of size.

Have the student describe their patterns and ask them to extend the patterns by adding more blocks.

  4. Describing Attribute Blocks

Provide the student with individual attribute blocks and ask them to describe the attributes of each block. For example, they can describe a block as "a red square with a thick edge".

Encourage the student to use precise language and be specific in their descriptions.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to learn about attribute blocks. Attribute blocks are special shapes with different colors, sizes, and thicknesses."
  • "We can sort attribute blocks based on their attributes. For example, we can put all the blocks with the same color together."
  • "We can also create patterns using attribute blocks. A pattern is when things repeat in a certain way. We can make patterns with colors, sizes, or thicknesses of the blocks."
  • "When we describe attribute blocks, we use words to tell others about their attributes. We can say things like 'a red square with a thick edge'."
