Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to solve problems using LEGO.
Materials and Prep
- LEGO bricks (assorted sizes and colors)
- Paper and pencil
Prior knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) is required.
Activities
- Building Number Towers: Use LEGO bricks to create towers representing different numbers. For example, build a tower of 5 bricks to represent the number 5. Practice addition and subtraction by combining or removing bricks from the towers.
- LEGO Word Problems: Create word problems related to LEGO constructions. For instance, "If you have 3 LEGO bricks and your friend gives you 2 more, how many bricks do you have in total?" Solve these problems using LEGO models and arithmetic operations.
- Math Race: Set up a race where you and your student build LEGO models and compete to see who can complete the task first. Use arithmetic operations to determine the number of bricks needed or the time it takes to complete the model.
- Measurement Challenges: Use LEGO bricks to measure different objects around the house. Estimate the length or height of an object and then use LEGO bricks to measure it accurately. Practice multiplication and division by comparing the measurements.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and their operations."
- "We use addition when we want to find the total of two or more numbers."
- "Subtraction is used to find the difference between two numbers or to take away a certain quantity from a given number."
- "Multiplication helps us find the result of repeated addition. For example, 3 x 4 means adding 3 four times."
- "Division is the opposite of multiplication. It helps us share or distribute a quantity equally among a certain number of groups."
- "By using LEGO bricks, we can make math more interactive and fun!"
