Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify key vocabulary related to pirates, understand basic concepts of reading comprehension, and engage in creative storytelling.

Materials and Prep

  • Pirate-themed books (e.g. "Pirates Love Underpants" by Claire Freedman, "How I Became a Pirate" by Melinda Long)
  • Paper and markers/crayons
  • Pirate props (e.g. eye patch, bandana, pretend pirate treasure)

Activities

  1. Read a Pirate Book: Begin the lesson by reading a pirate-themed book aloud to the student. Encourage them to listen carefully and ask questions about the story.
  2. Pirate Vocabulary: Introduce key pirate vocabulary words (e.g. pirate, treasure, ship, map) and discuss their meanings. Write the words on paper and have the student practice tracing or copying them.
  3. Create a Pirate Story: Using the pirate props and their imagination, have the student create their own pirate story. Encourage them to include the vocabulary words they learned and let them draw pictures to illustrate their story.
  4. Retell the Story: After the student has finished their story, have them retell it to you using their illustrations as visual aids. Ask questions to check their comprehension of the story.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to learn about pirates! Pirates are people who sail on ships and look for treasure."
  • "We will read a book about pirates and learn some new words that pirates use, like 'treasure' and 'ship'."
  • "After we read the book, we will use our imaginations to create our own pirate story. We can pretend to be pirates and wear pirate props like an eye patch or a bandana."
  • "Once we finish our story, we will retell it using our pictures. We will talk about what happened in the story and answer questions about it."
