Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to read and comprehend a short passage about cheerleading.

Materials and Prep

  • Printed or handwritten short passage about cheerleading
  • Pencil or pen

Activities

  1. Read the passage about cheerleading together. Take turns reading aloud and discuss any unfamiliar words or concepts.
  2. Ask the student to identify the main idea of the passage. Encourage them to use their own words to express the main point of the text.
  3. Have the student re-read the passage silently and underline any important details or key words they find.
  4. Ask the student to summarize the passage in their own words, focusing on the main idea and supporting details.
  5. Engage in a discussion about cheerleading, asking the student questions such as:
    • What do you think it takes to be a cheerleader?
    • Why do you think cheerleaders use pom-poms?
    • Have you ever watched a cheerleading performance? What did you like about it?
  6. To further practice reading comprehension, ask the student to draw a picture of a cheerleader and write a short sentence or two describing what they like about cheerleading.
