Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand how coding relates to language arts and writing.

Materials and Prep

  • Computer or laptop
  • Internet connection

No prior knowledge or preparation is required.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Coding

Start by discussing what coding is and how it relates to language arts and writing. Explain that coding is like writing instructions for a computer to follow. Just like in writing, we need to use clear and precise language when coding. Discuss how coding can be used to create stories, games, and websites.

  2. Writing an Algorithm

Introduce the concept of an algorithm, which is a step-by-step set of instructions. Explain that algorithms are used in coding to solve problems. Provide an example algorithm for a simple task, such as making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Have the student write their own algorithm for a different task, such as brushing their teeth or tying their shoes.

  3. Translate Algorithm into Code

Explain that coding languages are used to write algorithms in a format that computers can understand. Introduce a simple coding language, such as Scratch or Blockly. Have the student translate their written algorithm into code using the coding language. Encourage them to test their code to see if it successfully completes the task.

  4. Reflect and Discuss

After completing the coding activity, have a discussion with the student. Ask them how coding is similar to writing and language arts. Discuss the importance of clear instructions in both coding and writing. Encourage them to think about how they can apply their coding skills to create stories or games in the future.
