Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe different gemstones, and understand how they are formed.

Materials and Prep

  • A book about gemstones (e.g., "Gemstones A-Z" by Diane Lawton)
  • A computer or tablet with internet access
  • A piece of paper and crayons or colored pencils

Activities

  1. Read the book about gemstones together. Pay attention to the names and characteristics of different gemstones.

  2. Using the computer or tablet, search for images of different gemstones. Discuss their colors, shapes, and sizes.

  3. Choose one gemstone that you find interesting. Draw a picture of it on the piece of paper, and write its name underneath.

  4. Share your drawing and describe the gemstone to a family member or friend. Explain why you find it fascinating.
