Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using toy cars.
Materials and Prep
- Toy cars
No additional preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Addition Race
- Activity 2: Subtraction Challenge
- Activity 3: Counting Cars
Place two toy cars at the starting line. Roll a dice and add the numbers shown on the dice. Move the cars forward according to the sum. The first car to reach the finish line wins!
Set up a racetrack with obstacles. Place a toy car at the starting point. Roll a dice and subtract the number shown on the dice from the starting point. Move the car backward according to the difference. Try to navigate the obstacles and reach the finish line.
Line up a group of toy cars. Count the cars and write down the number. Remove some cars and count how many are left. Practice subtraction by finding the difference between the original number and the remaining cars.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Mathematics is all about numbers and solving problems."
- "Today, we will be using toy cars to practice addition and subtraction."
- "Addition is when we combine two or more numbers to find the total."
- "Subtraction is when we take away a number from another number to find the difference."
- "We can use toy cars to represent numbers and move them forward or backward to solve addition and subtraction problems."
- "We will also practice counting and subtracting by removing cars from a group."
