By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a descriptive paragraph about autumn using appropriate vocabulary and sensory details.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Autumn-themed pictures or objects (optional)

Activities

  1. Introduction: Begin by discussing autumn with the student. Ask them what they know about autumn and what they like about it. Show them any autumn-themed pictures or objects you have, if available.
  2. Vocabulary Brainstorm: Together, brainstorm a list of autumn-related words. Write these words on the board or a piece of paper. Encourage the student to think of adjectives, nouns, and verbs related to autumn.
  3. Sensory Details: Explain to the student that good writing includes sensory details that help the reader imagine and experience what is being described. Discuss the five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch) and ask the student to think of specific sensory details they can use to describe autumn.
  4. Descriptive Paragraph Writing: Instruct the student to write a descriptive paragraph about autumn using the vocabulary words and sensory details they brainstormed. Encourage them to use complete sentences and descriptive language.
  5. Sharing and Feedback: Have the student read their paragraph aloud or share it with someone else. Provide positive feedback and ask questions to encourage further thinking and improvement.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "What is autumn? Autumn is one of the four seasons. It comes after summer and before winter. During autumn, the weather starts to get cooler, and the leaves on trees change colors and fall."
  • "Why is autumn special? Autumn is special because it has its own unique colors and smells. It is a season when we can see beautiful red, orange, and yellow leaves. We can also enjoy activities like apple picking and pumpkin carving."
  • "What are some words we can use to describe autumn? Let's think of adjectives like colorful, crisp, and cool. We can also use nouns like leaves, pumpkins, and scarecrows. And don't forget verbs like falling, crunching, and changing."
  • "What are sensory details? Sensory details are words that help us experience things with our senses. For example, we can describe the sound of leaves crunching under our feet, the smell of apple pie baking, or the feeling of a cool breeze on our skin."
  • "How can we write a descriptive paragraph about autumn? We can start by writing a topic sentence that tells what our paragraph will be about. Then we can use our vocabulary words and sensory details to describe autumn in detail. Finally, we can end with a concluding sentence that wraps up our paragraph."
