Uno Power Math!

Materials:

  • Deck of Uno cards (only number cards 0-9 needed)
  • Paper
  • Pencil or crayon

Hello Super Mathematician! Did you know your favorite Uno cards are packed with numbers? Today, we're going to use those cool cards to become number superstars! Let's play some math games with Uno!

Warm-up: Number Hunt!

Spread out some Uno number cards face up. Can you find...

  • A card with the number 5?
  • A card with the number 0?
  • All the red cards?
  • A card with a number smaller than 3?
  • A card with a number larger than 7?

Great job hunting!

Activity 1: Uno War - Comparing Numbers!

1. Remove all the special cards (Skip, Reverse, Draw Two, Wild, Wild Draw Four) from the Uno deck. Shuffle the number cards (0-9).
2. Divide the deck roughly in half between you and your grown-up.
3. Both players flip over one card at the same time.
4. Compare the numbers! The player with the higher number takes both cards.
5. If the numbers are the same (like two 7s), it's WAR! Each player places three cards face down, then flips a fourth card face up. The player with the higher fourth card wins ALL the cards from that round.
6. Play until one player has collected all the cards, or for a set amount of time (like 10 minutes).
7. Talk about the numbers: "My 8 is greater than your 3!" or "Our 5s are equal!"

Activity 2: Uno Addition Power!

1. Keep the shuffled number cards in a pile face down.
2. Draw two cards from the pile.
3. Place them face up side-by-side.
4. What number sentence can you make? If you drew a 4 and a 2, the sentence is 4 + 2 = ?
5. Write down the number sentence on your paper and solve it! (4 + 2 = 6)
6. Check your answer. You can even count the dots or symbols on the cards if you need help.
7. Try drawing 5 pairs of cards and solving the addition problems.

Activity 3: Uno Subtraction Challenge!

1. Use the same pile of number cards.
2. Draw two cards.
3. Place them face up.
4. This time, we subtract! Always put the bigger number first. If you drew a 7 and a 3, the sentence is 7 - 3 = ?
5. If you draw two cards where the first is smaller (like a 2 and then an 8), make sure to put the bigger one first for subtraction: 8 - 2 = ?
6. Write down the subtraction sentence and find the answer. (7 - 3 = 4 or 8 - 2 = 6)
7. Draw 5 pairs of cards and solve the subtraction problems.

Wrap-up:

Wow! Look at all the math you did using Uno cards! You compared numbers, added them together, and subtracted them. Math can be found everywhere, even in your favorite games! Keep practicing, and you'll be an arithmetic champion!
