Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts and apply them to hummingbird-related activities.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencils or crayons
- Counting objects (e.g., small pebbles, buttons, or beads)
- Printed pictures of hummingbirds
Activities
-
Counting Hummingbirds:
Look at the printed pictures of hummingbirds. Count how many hummingbirds are on each picture. Write down the number next to each picture.
-
Addition with Nectar:
Imagine each hummingbird drinks 3 drops of nectar. Draw a hummingbird and add 3 drops of nectar above it. Then draw another hummingbird and add 3 more drops of nectar. Count the total number of drops of nectar.
-
Subtraction with Flowers:
Draw a picture of a flower and color it. Now imagine a hummingbird comes and takes away 2 petals from the flower. Count how many petals are left after the hummingbird leaves.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about arithmetic, which is a fancy word for math. We will use hummingbirds to help us understand how to add and subtract numbers."
- "Counting is an important skill in math. When we count the number of hummingbirds in a picture, we are practicing our counting skills."
- "Adding means putting things together. We will add drops of nectar to the hummingbirds to find the total number of drops."
- "Subtracting means taking things away. We will subtract petals from a flower to see how many are left after a hummingbird takes some."
