Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and describe different minerals and their properties.

Materials and Prep

  • A variety of mineral samples (at least 5 different types)
  • A magnifying glass or hand lens
  • A notebook and pen/pencil
  • Internet access (optional)

Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of rocks and minerals.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Minerals: Begin by discussing what minerals are and their importance in Earth Science. Show the student different mineral samples and explain their properties such as color, luster, hardness, and cleavage.

  2. Mineral Identification: Give the student a set of mineral samples and ask them to identify each one based on its properties. Encourage the use of a magnifying glass to observe finer details.

  3. Mineral Properties Chart: Have the student create a chart in their notebook to record the properties of each mineral sample. They can include columns for color, luster, hardness, cleavage, and any other relevant properties.

  4. Research and Presentation: Assign the student a specific mineral and ask them to research its properties, uses, and occurrence. They can present their findings to the class or create a poster to display their research.
