Objective
By the end of this lesson, the eighth-grade homeschool student will have a better understanding of discrimination in Australia, specifically focusing on views against different minority groups such as discrimination against China and COVID-19, as well as discrimination against Muslims following the 9/11 attacks. They will also learn about a significant historical period where discrimination against a race and minorities was at its worst and the impact it had.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook or paper
- Pen or pencil
No prior knowledge or materials are required for this lesson.
Activities
- Research: Encourage the student to conduct independent research on discrimination in Australia, focusing on the specific topics of discrimination against China and COVID-19, as well as discrimination against Muslims after the 9/11 attacks. They can use various online resources or books available at home to gather information.
- Analysis: Once the research is complete, ask the student to write a short essay or create a presentation highlighting the key findings and examples of discrimination against these minority groups. They should include specific incidents, impacts, and any efforts made to address or combat discrimination.
- Discussion: Engage in a discussion with the student about a significant historical period where discrimination against a race and minorities was at its worst. You can focus on events such as the Holocaust, the African American Civil Rights Movement, or the Japanese internment during World War II. Encourage the student to share their thoughts, ask questions, and discuss the impact of discrimination during that time.
- Reflection: After the discussion, ask the student to reflect on the overall lesson and share their thoughts on the importance of understanding and addressing discrimination in society. They can write a short reflection or create a visual representation of their thoughts.
