Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic concepts in a fun and engaging way while exploring their interest in horses.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Basic knowledge of arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Horse Feed Calculation

Ask the student to research the average daily feed requirements for a horse. Once they have the information, provide them with a hypothetical scenario where they need to calculate the total amount of feed required for a certain number of horses over a specific period of time. Encourage them to use their arithmetic skills to solve the problem and check their answers using a calculator if available.

  2. Activity 2: Horse Race Time Calculation

Introduce the concept of horse racing and explain how race times are measured in seconds. Provide the student with a list of race times for different horses and ask them to convert the times into minutes and seconds. Have them compare the race times and determine the fastest horse. This activity will help reinforce their arithmetic skills in time conversion.

  3. Activity 3: Horse Height Conversion

Discuss the different units used to measure horse height, such as hands and centimeters. Give the student a set of horse heights in hands and ask them to convert them into centimeters using their arithmetic skills. This activity will help them practice unit conversion and reinforce their understanding of different measurement systems.

Eighth Grade Talking Points
