Objective

By the end of this lesson, the seventh-grade homeschool student will be able to analyze and comprehend horse-related reading materials, including informational texts and narratives.

Activities

1. Reading Comprehension:

   Choose a horse-related article or book chapter to read. Before reading, ask the student to preview the text by examining the title, headings, and any accompanying images. While reading, encourage the student to annotate and take notes on important details, unfamiliar words, and any questions that arise. After reading, discuss the main ideas, key details, and any new vocabulary.

2. Character Analysis:

   Select a horse-themed narrative or story. Ask the student to identify the main character(s) and describe their traits, motivations, and actions. Encourage the student to provide evidence from the text to support their analysis. Discuss how the character's interactions with horses impact the plot and theme of the story.

3. Comparing Texts:

   Provide two different horse-related reading materials, such as an informational article and a fictional story. Ask the student to compare and contrast the two texts, focusing on their purposes, structures, and tones. Discuss how the author's choices in each text contribute to their overall message and impact on the reader.

4. Creative Writing:

   Encourage the student to write a short story or poem inspired by their interest in horses. Remind them to incorporate descriptive language, sensory details, and elements of storytelling. After completing their writing, have the student share and discuss their piece, highlighting the use of literary devices and effective storytelling techniques.
