Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore the world of fashion through visual arts and develop an appreciation for different artistic elements and styles within the fashion industry.

Materials and Prep

  • Sketchbook or blank sheets of paper
  • Pencils, erasers, and colored pencils
  • Access to the internet or fashion magazines
  • Optional: Fabric scraps, buttons, and other small decorative materials

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Research and Explore: Use the internet or fashion magazines to research different fashion designers, their styles, and their impact on the fashion industry. Take notes and collect images that catch your attention.
  2. Create a Fashion Sketch: Based on the research, choose one designer or a combination of styles that inspire you. Using your sketchbook or blank sheets of paper, create a fashion sketch of an outfit that represents your chosen style. Pay attention to details such as clothing silhouettes, patterns, and accessories.
  3. Add Color and Texture: Once you are satisfied with your fashion sketch, use colored pencils to add color and texture to your design. Experiment with different shading techniques to bring your outfit to life.
  4. Optional: Enhance Your Design: If you have fabric scraps, buttons, or other decorative materials, use them to enhance your fashion sketch. Cut out fabric shapes and glue them onto your design, or add buttons and other embellishments to make it more three-dimensional.
  5. Reflect and Appreciate: Take a step back and reflect on your completed fashion sketch. Write a short paragraph describing the elements and styles you incorporated, and explain why you appreciate the chosen designer or style.
