Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to solve arithmetic problems related to mysteries and develop critical thinking skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper
  • Calculator (optional)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Crack the Code: Create a mystery code by assigning each letter of the alphabet a number (e.g., A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, and so on). Write down a mystery word or phrase using the assigned numbers. Challenge yourself to solve the code by performing arithmetic operations to find the corresponding letters. For example, if the code is "8-5-12-12-15", you would perform subtraction to find the letters H-E-L-L-O.

  2. Mystery Number Riddles: Write down a series of arithmetic riddles where the answer is a mystery number. For example, "I am an even number. When you add 5 to me, the result is 17. What number am I?" Encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills as you solve these riddles together.

  3. Math Mystery Story: Create a math mystery story where the protagonist needs to solve arithmetic problems to unravel the mystery. Write down a story with clues that require solving addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division problems to progress. Work through the story together, solving the problems and uncovering the mystery.

Third Grade Talking Points
