Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to solve algebraic equations using glow sticks as visual aids.
Materials and Prep
- Glow sticks (different colors)
- Paper and pencil
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Introduce the concept of algebra by explaining that it is a way to solve equations using letters or symbols to represent unknown numbers.
-
Give the student a glow stick and ask them to break it to activate the glow.
-
Write a simple algebraic equation on the paper, such as "x + 3 = 7".
-
Explain that the glow stick represents the unknown number, x, and the equation represents the relationship between x and the other numbers.
-
Ask the student to solve the equation by figuring out the value of x. They can do this by subtracting 3 from both sides of the equation.
-
Once they have solved the equation, have them break another glow stick and count the number of glowing segments. This will represent the value of x.
-
Repeat this process with different equations, using different colors of glow sticks to represent different unknowns.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Algebra is a way to solve equations using letters or symbols to represent unknown numbers."
- "We can use glow sticks to help us understand and solve algebraic equations."
- "The glow stick represents the unknown number, and the equation shows the relationship between the unknown number and the other numbers."
- "To solve the equation, we can perform the same operation on both sides of the equation to isolate the unknown number."
- "Once we have solved the equation, we can use another glow stick to represent the value of the unknown number."
- "We can repeat this process with different equations and different colors of glow sticks to solve more algebraic problems."
