Objective
By the end of this 4-week lesson plan, the student will be able to analyze and interpret the themes, characters, and writing style in the book Little Women, as well as demonstrate their understanding through various writing assignments.
Materials and Prep
- Copy of the book Little Women
- Notebook or journal for writing assignments
- Access to a computer or writing utensils and paper
- Prior knowledge of basic literary analysis concepts (plot, theme, characterization)
Activities

Read the first few chapters of Little Women and discuss the setting, main characters, and initial conflict. Have the student write a short reflection on their initial impressions of the story and characters.
Select one of the main characters from Little Women and have the student analyze their personality traits, motivations, and development throughout the book. Encourage them to provide evidence from the text to support their analysis. Have the student write a character analysis essay.
Identify and discuss the major themes present in Little Women, such as family, love, and societal expectations. Have the student choose one theme and write a persuasive essay explaining how it is developed and why it is important in the story.
Explore the writing style of the author, Louisa May Alcott, in Little Women. Discuss elements such as tone, diction, and figurative language. Have the student write a reflection on how Alcott's writing style enhances the overall reading experience.
