Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore the connection between visual arts and Christianity, and gain a deeper appreciation for the role of art in religious expression.

Materials and Prep

• Access to the internet for research

Activities

1. Start by discussing the importance of art in Christianity. Talk about how art has been used throughout history to depict religious stories, convey spiritual messages, and inspire worship.

   Ask the student to choose a biblical story or concept that they find particularly meaningful or inspiring. Encourage them to think about how they can visually represent this story or concept through their own artwork.

2. Have the student research famous Christian artworks and artists. They can explore different art movements, such as Renaissance or Baroque, and examine how Christianity influenced the themes and styles of these artworks.

   Ask the student to select one artwork that resonates with them and write a short analysis discussing the artist's intentions, the symbolism used, and the overall message conveyed in the artwork.

3. Now it's time for the student to create their own artwork inspired by their chosen biblical story or concept. They can use any medium they prefer, such as drawing, painting, or even digital art.

   Encourage the student to incorporate symbolism and meaningful elements into their artwork, just like the famous Christian artworks they researched.

4. After completing their artwork, have the student reflect on the process. Ask them to write a short reflection discussing how creating art helped them deepen their understanding of the chosen biblical story or concept, and how it enhanced their personal connection to their faith.
