Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand the basics of chemistry through fun Star Wars-themed activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Water
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Measuring spoons
  • Plastic cups
  • Empty plastic bottle with a cap
  • Small balloon
  • Marker
  • Star Wars-themed stickers (optional)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson. Just come with your curiosity and enthusiasm!

Activities

  1. Exploding Death Star: Fill a plastic cup halfway with vinegar. Add a few drops of food coloring if desired. In another cup, mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with a small amount of water to create a paste. Place the baking soda paste inside the empty plastic bottle. Quickly place the bottle on top of the vinegar-filled cup, making sure the opening is sealed. Watch as the chemical reaction causes the bottle to pop off like an exploding Death Star!

  2. Forceful Balloon: Blow up a small balloon and tie it off. Use a marker to draw a Star Wars character or symbol on the balloon. Fill the plastic cup with vinegar, about halfway. Attach the balloon to the opening of the cup without letting any air escape. Lift the balloon, allowing the vinegar to mix with the baking soda residue left inside the balloon. Observe how the gas produced inflates the balloon, representing the forceful power of the Dark Side!

Fourth Grade Talking Points

  • "Chemistry is the study of matter and how different substances can interact with each other."
  • "In the first activity, the vinegar and baking soda react to produce carbon dioxide gas, which creates pressure inside the bottle and causes it to pop off."
  • "The second activity demonstrates the reaction between vinegar and baking soda again, but this time the gas produced fills the balloon, inflating it."
  • "Chemical reactions can be exciting and have different outcomes depending on the substances involved."
  • "Just like the Force in Star Wars, chemistry can be powerful and create amazing effects!"
