Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Computer or tablet with internet access
  • Access to crime scene investigation documentaries or articles

Prior knowledge of basic biology concepts such as cells, DNA, and genetics would be helpful but not required.

Activities

  1. Watch a crime scene investigation documentary or read an article about a real-life criminal case. Take notes on the biological evidence presented and how it was used to solve the case.

  2. Research and write a short report on the role of DNA analysis in criminal investigations. Include examples of famous cases where DNA evidence played a crucial role in solving the crime.

  3. Create a fictional crime scene scenario. Write a detailed description of the crime scene and the evidence left behind. Based on your knowledge of biology, explain how the evidence could be used to identify the perpetrator.

  4. Design a poster or infographic showcasing the different types of biological evidence that can be found at a crime scene. Include explanations of how each type of evidence can be analyzed and its significance in a criminal investigation.
