Materials Needed:

  • Book about ambulances (e.g., "A is for Ambulance" or similar non-fiction/fiction book)
  • Toy ambulance (optional)
  • Letter 'A' flashcard or magnetic letter
  • Red and white construction paper
  • Scissors (adult supervision recommended)
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons or markers

Lesson Activities:

1. Introduction: What's That Sound? (5 mins)

Start by making a siren sound ("Wooo-wooo-wooo!"). Ask your student, "What makes that sound?" Talk about ambulances and show the toy ambulance if you have one. Ask what they know about ambulances (they help people who are sick or hurt, they go to the hospital fast).

2. Story Time: Ambulance Adventures (10 mins)

Read the chosen book about ambulances. Pause to ask questions like, "What color is the ambulance?" "What special lights does it have?" "Who works in the ambulance?" (Paramedics, EMTs - community helpers!).

3. Letter Focus: 'A' is for Ambulance! (10 mins)

Show the letter 'A' flashcard. "This is the letter A. Ambulance starts with A!" Practice the sound 'A' makes (short 'a' sound as in 'ambulance'). Look for the letter 'A' in the book or write the word "AMBULANCE" largely on paper and have the student point to all the 'A's. Can they think of other words starting with 'A'? (Apple, Ant, Alligator).

4. Craft Time: Make an Ambulance! (15 mins)

Give the student a piece of white construction paper. Help them (or pre-cut) shapes to make an ambulance: a large rectangle for the body, two circles for wheels, a small square for the window, and a red cross shape (or a simple red square/rectangle for the light). Have the student glue the pieces onto another piece of paper (or the white rectangle) to assemble their ambulance. They can draw details like doors or use crayons.

5. Wrap-up: Ambulance Role Play (5 mins)

Use the toy ambulance or the craft ambulance. Pretend there's an emergency! Make the siren sound and "drive" the ambulance to help someone. Reinforce that ambulances are important helpers in our community.
