Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Kindergarten student will be able to identify and name different parts of a book, understand the concept of reading left to right, and demonstrate comprehension of a simple story.
Materials and Prep
- Picture books
- Index cards
- Markers or crayons
- Scissors
Prior to the lesson, prepare index cards with the names of different parts of a book written on them, such as "cover," "pages," "title," and "author."
Activities
- Introduction to Parts of a Book: Show the student different picture books and ask them to identify the different parts of a book, such as the cover, pages, title, and author. Discuss the purpose of each part.
- Interactive Book Creation: Give the student a blank index card and ask them to draw a picture on it. Then, cut the card into separate pieces representing different parts of a book (e.g., cover, pages). Mix up the pieces and ask the student to put the book back together correctly.
- Reading Left to Right: Read a simple story aloud to the student and emphasize the direction of reading from left to right. Encourage the student to follow along with their finger as you read.
- Story Comprehension: After reading the story, ask the student questions about the characters, setting, and events. Encourage them to retell the story in their own words.
