Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe different elements of a story while incorporating your interest in Minecraft.

Materials and Prep

  • Minecraft-themed storybook or Minecraft-related reading material
  • Writing materials (pencils, crayons, markers, etc.)

Activities

  1. Read a Minecraft-themed story together: Start the lesson by reading a Minecraft-themed storybook or any Minecraft-related reading material. Encourage the student to actively listen and engage in the story.
  2. Identify story elements: After reading the story, discuss the different elements of the story with the student. Ask questions like:
    • "Who are the characters in the story? Can you name them?"
    • "Where does the story take place? Can you describe the setting?"
    • "What is the problem or conflict in the story?"
    • "How is the problem resolved? What happens at the end of the story?"
Encourage the student to think critically and provide their own interpretations and ideas about the story elements.
  3. Create a Minecraft story: Now it's time for the student to become a storyteller! Provide them with writing materials and ask them to create their own Minecraft story. Encourage them to include characters, a setting, a problem, and a solution in their story. They can draw pictures to accompany their writing if they'd like.
  4. Share and discuss the stories: Once the student has finished their story, have them share it with you. Listen attentively and ask questions to further their understanding of story elements. Discuss the similarities and differences between their story and the one you read together.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "In a story, we have characters. Characters are the people or animals in the story. Can you name some characters from the Minecraft story we read?"
  • "The setting is where the story takes place. It can be a real place or a made-up place. Can you describe the setting of the Minecraft story?"
  • "Every story has a problem or conflict. It's something that needs to be solved. What was the problem in the Minecraft story we read?"
  • "The solution is how the problem gets fixed. How was the problem resolved in the Minecraft story?"
  • "Now it's your turn to be a storyteller! Can you create your own Minecraft story with characters, a setting, a problem, and a solution?"
  • "Let's share your story! I'm excited to hear what you came up with. What are some similarities and differences between your story and the one we read?"
