Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply algebraic concepts to solve problems related to horses.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Blank paper
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Basic understanding of arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Horse Speed Calculation

    Imagine you are participating in a horse race. The distance of the race is 500 meters. You want to calculate the average speed of your horse in meters per second. Use the formula:

    Speed = Distance / Time

    Measure the time it takes for your horse to complete the race and calculate its speed.

  2. Activity 2: Horse Feed Calculation

    You need to feed your horse with a balanced diet. The recommended daily intake of hay for a horse is 2% of its body weight. Your horse weighs 500 kilograms. Calculate the amount of hay (in kilograms) you should feed your horse each day.

  3. Activity 3: Horse Jumping Heights

    Horses can jump different heights based on their abilities. You want to calculate the maximum height your horse can jump. Use the formula:

    Height = 0.4 * (Speed^2 / Gravity)

    Assume the acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 meters per second squared. Calculate the maximum height your horse can jump based on its speed.

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • "Algebra is a branch of mathematics that uses letters and symbols to represent numbers and quantities."
  • "In Activity 1, we used the formula for speed, which is Distance divided by Time. This formula helps us calculate how fast an object is moving."
  • "Activity 2 involved using percentages. We used the recommended daily intake of hay for a horse, which is 2% of its body weight, to calculate the amount of hay to feed."
  • "In Activity 3, we used a formula to calculate the maximum height a horse can jump based on its speed. This formula involves squaring the speed and dividing it by the acceleration due to gravity."
  • "Understanding algebra can help us solve various real-life problems, such as calculating speeds, quantities, and heights."
