Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and forage for wild flowers, understanding their characteristics and importance in the ecosystem.

Materials and Prep

  • A notebook or journal
  • A field guide to wild flowers (can be an online resource or a physical book)
  • A camera or smartphone to take pictures
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunscreen and bug repellent

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has a basic understanding of plant anatomy and the importance of plants in the environment.

Activities

  • Introduction: Start by discussing the importance of wild flowers in the ecosystem and their role in supporting pollinators.
  • Field Trip: Take the student on a field trip to a local park or nature reserve where they can find a variety of wild flowers. Encourage them to observe and document the different species they encounter.
  • Identification: Using the field guide, have the student identify the wild flowers they found during the field trip. Discuss the characteristics of each species and their unique adaptations.
  • Foraging: Teach the student about sustainable foraging practices and the importance of leaving enough flowers for pollinators and for the plants to reproduce. Show them how to ethically collect a small sample of flowers for observation or pressing.
  • Journaling: Have the student create a journal entry or report about their experience foraging wild flowers. They can include sketches, photographs, or descriptions of the flowers they found.

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • "Different wild flower species have unique characteristics, such as flower shape, color, and scent, which attract specific pollinators."
  • "Foraging wild flowers should be done responsibly to ensure the plants can continue to reproduce and support the ecosystem."
  • "By understanding the characteristics of wild flowers, we can appreciate their beauty and importance in the natural world."
  • "Creating a journal or report about our foraging experience helps us document and remember the different wild flower species we encountered."
