Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply geometric concepts and principles to create and analyze Lego structures.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks and plates
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Pencil and paper
Prior knowledge of basic geometric shapes and their properties is helpful.
Activities
-
Build a square:
- Use Lego bricks to construct a square shape.
- Measure the length of each side using a ruler or measuring tape.
- Record the measurements.
-
Create a rectangle:
- Build a rectangle using Lego bricks.
- Measure the length and width of the rectangle.
- Calculate the area and perimeter of the rectangle.
-
Construct a triangle:
- Build a triangle using Lego bricks.
- Identify the type of triangle (equilateral, isosceles, or scalene).
- Measure the lengths of the sides and record the measurements.
-
Build a 3D shape:
- Choose a 2D shape (square, rectangle, triangle) and build multiple copies of it using Lego plates.
- Stack the 2D shapes to create a 3D structure.
- Describe the properties of the 3D shape (number of faces, edges, and vertices).
Eighth Grade Talking Points
- "Geometry is a branch of mathematics that deals with shapes, sizes, and properties of figures."
- "In this lesson, we will explore geometric concepts using Lego bricks."
- "We will start by building squares and measuring their sides."
- "Next, we will construct rectangles and calculate their area and perimeter."
- "Then, we will build triangles and identify their types based on side lengths."
- "Finally, we will create 3D shapes by stacking 2D shapes and describe their properties."
- "By applying geometry to Lego building, we can have fun while learning about shapes and their characteristics."
