Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to connect their interest in Minecraft with reading by identifying and discussing key elements of storytelling.

Materials and Prep

  • Minecraft storybook or Minecraft-themed reading materials
  • Writing materials (paper, pencils, crayons)
  • Computer or tablet with Minecraft game (optional)

Activities

  1. Introduction: Begin by asking the student about their favorite aspects of Minecraft and what they enjoy doing in the game.
  2. Storybook Reading: Read a Minecraft storybook or a Minecraft-themed reading material together. Encourage the student to actively listen and engage with the story.
  3. Discussion: Ask the student questions about the story, such as their favorite character, the problem faced by the characters, and how the problem was resolved.
  4. Character Creation: Have the student create their own Minecraft character on paper. Encourage them to think about the character's appearance, personality, and abilities.
  5. Writing Activity: Ask the student to write a short story or description about their Minecraft character. Provide assistance as needed and encourage creativity.
  6. Sharing and Presentation: Have the student share their written story or description with you or other family members. Encourage them to read it aloud and explain their character.
  7. Extension Activity (optional): If the student has access to a computer or tablet with Minecraft, allow them to create a scene or build related to their character in the game.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "In Minecraft, we can explore and create different worlds. Just like in stories, we can imagine and go on adventures with characters."
  • "Stories have characters. Can you tell me who your favorite Minecraft character is and why?"
  • "Every story has a problem or challenge. Can you think of a problem faced by the characters in the Minecraft story we read?"
  • "How do you think the characters in the story felt when they solved their problem? Can you tell me why?"
  • "Writing stories helps us express our ideas and imagination. What would you like to write about your own Minecraft character?"
  • "When we share our stories, we can inspire others and make them curious about our characters. Can you tell me how you would describe your Minecraft character to someone?"
