Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts through fun activities related to Justin Time.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Counting objects (e.g., small toys, buttons, or coins)
- Printouts of Justin Time images (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Counting with Justin Time: Look at a picture of Justin Time and count the number of objects you see in the picture. Write down the number.
- Addition with Justin Time: Choose two numbers between 1 and 10. Use the counting objects to represent each number, and then combine them to find the total. Write down the addition equation.
- Subtraction with Justin Time: Choose two numbers between 1 and 10. Use the counting objects to represent the larger number, and then remove the objects representing the smaller number. Write down the subtraction equation.
- Number Patterns with Justin Time: Look at a series of numbers and find the pattern. Fill in the missing numbers in the pattern. For example, if the pattern is 2, 4, __, 8, 10, you would write down 6 as the missing number.
Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with math and use Justin Time to help us learn."
- "Math is all about numbers and counting. We use math to solve problems and understand the world around us."
- "Let's start by looking at a picture of Justin Time and counting the objects we see. Can you tell me how many objects there are?"
- "Now, let's practice addition with Justin Time. We will choose two numbers and combine them to find the total. Can you show me how we can use the counting objects to help us add?"
- "Great! Now, let's move on to subtraction. We will choose two numbers and remove the objects representing the smaller number. Can you show me how we can use the counting objects to help us subtract?"
- "Lastly, let's have some fun with number patterns. We will look at a series of numbers and find the missing numbers in the pattern. Can you tell me what number should come next in this pattern: 2, 4, __, 8, 10?"
- "Well done! You did a fantastic job learning arithmetic with Justin Time today. Keep practicing and exploring math in your everyday life!"
