Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to sewing and designing outfits/cosplay.

Materials and Prep

  • Measuring tape
  • Calculator
  • Paper and pencil
  • Ruler
  • Fabric scraps
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine (optional)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Measurement Conversion Challenge:

Take various measurements of your body using the measuring tape. Convert the measurements from inches to centimeters and vice versa using the conversion factor of 2.54 cm = 1 inch.

  2. Fabric Calculation:

Choose a sewing project or cosplay outfit you would like to design. Measure the dimensions of the different fabric pieces you will need (e.g., length, width). Calculate the total amount of fabric required for each piece and the overall amount needed for the project.

  3. Pattern Scaling:

Find or create a sewing pattern for your chosen project. Use the ruler to measure the pattern pieces and calculate the scaling factor needed to adjust the pattern to fit your body measurements. Apply the scaling factor to enlarge or reduce the pattern pieces accordingly.

  4. Cost Estimation:

Research the prices of fabrics and other materials needed for your project. Calculate the estimated cost of the materials based on the quantities required. Compare prices from different sources to find the best deals.

  5. Measurement Application:

Take your fabric scraps and practice measuring and cutting pieces according to the measurements you calculated earlier. If you have access to a sewing machine, you can sew the pieces together to create a small sample garment or cosplay accessory.

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • "In sewing and designing outfits/cosplay, understanding arithmetic concepts is essential for accurate measurements and calculations."
  • "Measurement conversion is necessary when working with patterns or fabrics from different countries, as they may use different units of measurement."
  • "Calculating the required amount of fabric ensures you purchase the right quantity and minimize waste."
  • "Scaling patterns allows you to customize them to fit your body shape and size."
  • "Considering the cost of materials helps you budget and make informed decisions."
