Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to write a movie review on the Titanic movie, identify the main characters, determine if certain elements were fact or fiction, rate the movie, and express personal likes and dislikes about the film.

Materials and Prep

  • Titanic movie
  • Notebook or paper
  • Pens or pencils
  • Oil pastels or colored pencils
  • Glitter pens (optional)

Before the lesson, make sure the student has watched the Titanic movie and has access to the necessary materials.

Activities

  1. Identify the Main Characters:

Have the student create a list of the main characters in the Titanic movie. They should include both Rose and Jack, but also any other significant characters they remember.

  2. Fact or Fiction:

Discuss with the student whether it was fact or fiction that the orchestra played as the Titanic was sinking. Explain that it is true, and then ask why they think the orchestra continued to play while chaos reigned all around them. Encourage the student to think about the power of music and how it can provide comfort and a sense of normalcy in difficult situations.

  3. Rate the Movie:

Ask the student to rate the Titanic movie out of 10, with 10 being the highest rating. Have them justify their rating by highlighting specific aspects of the movie that they enjoyed or found lacking.

  4. Draw Rose's Necklace:

Using oil pastels or colored pencils, ask the student to draw the necklace that Rose had in the movie. Encourage them to use colors and add glitter accents if they are using pencils.

  5. Was There Room for Jack?

Discuss with the student the scene where Jack is in the freezing water and Rose is on the floating board. Ask them if they think there was room for Jack on the board. Encourage them to think about the physics and logistics of the situation.

  6. Likes and Dislikes:

Have the student share what they liked about the Titanic movie and what they didn't like. Encourage them to provide specific examples to support their opinions.
