Objective

By the end of this lesson, the homeschool student will be able to make connections between fitness and reading, and understand the importance of reading in relation to their fitness goals.

Materials and Prep

  • Books or articles related to fitness
  • Notebook or journal
  • Pen or pencil

Before starting the lesson, the student should have a basic understanding of reading comprehension and be able to read independently.

Activities

  1. Warm-up: Have the student engage in a physical warm-up activity of their choice for 10 minutes. This could include stretching, jumping jacks, or a short jog.
  2. Reading Session: Provide the student with a fitness-related book or article to read. Encourage them to choose a topic they are interested in, such as nutrition, exercise routines, or sports. Give them 20-30 minutes to read and take notes in their notebook or journal.
  3. Discussion: Engage in a conversation with the student about what they learned from the reading. Encourage them to share any interesting facts or insights they discovered. Ask them to explain how the information they read relates to their fitness goals.
  4. Writing Exercise: Ask the student to write a short paragraph or essay summarizing the main points they learned from the reading. Encourage them to incorporate their own thoughts and reflections on how the information can be applied to their fitness journey.
  5. Cool-down Activity: Finish the lesson with a cool-down activity, such as deep breathing or gentle stretching, to help the student relax and reflect on what they have learned.
