Objective

By the end of this lesson, the fifth-grade homeschool student will be able to introduce themselves in Spanish and have a basic conversation about their interest in playing the piano.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Access to online Spanish-English dictionary (optional)

Activities

  1. Begin by teaching the student how to introduce themselves in Spanish. Write down the following phrases on the paper:

    • "Hola, me llamo [student's name]." (Hello, my name is [student's name].)
    • "¿Cómo te llamas?" (What is your name?)
    • "Mucho gusto." (Nice to meet you.)

Practice saying these phrases out loud together.

  2. Next, ask the student to think of a sentence to describe their interest in playing the piano. Encourage them to use vocabulary they already know or look up new words in a Spanish-English dictionary.

Write down the sentence on the paper, for example:

    • "Me gusta tocar el piano." (I like to play the piano.)

Practice saying the sentence together, emphasizing correct pronunciation.

  3. Now, have a simple conversation in Spanish using the phrases and sentence learned. Model the conversation by asking the student their name and expressing interest in their piano playing. Encourage the student to respond using the phrases and sentence they have learned.

    Example conversation:

    • You: "Hola, me llamo [your name]. ¿Cómo te llamas?" (Hello, my name is [your name]. What is your name?)
    • Student: "Hola, me llamo [student's name]." (Hello, my name is [student's name].)
    • You: "Mucho gusto. Me gusta tocar el piano. ¿Y a ti?" (Nice to meet you. I like to play the piano. And you?)
    • Student: "Me gusta tocar el piano también." (I like to play the piano too.)

Repeat the conversation multiple times, switching roles between you and the student.
