By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the importance of physical activity for musicians, and incorporate physical exercises into their piano practice routine.

Materials and Prep

  • Piano
  • Comfortable clothing and shoes
  • Water bottle
  • Knowledge of basic piano playing

Activities

  1. Warm-up Exercises: Begin the lesson with a series of warm-up exercises to prepare the body for physical activity. This can include stretching, jumping jacks, or jogging in place.

  2. Piano Posture Practice: Teach and practice correct piano posture. Explain the importance of maintaining a straight back, relaxed shoulders, and proper hand positioning while playing the piano.

  3. Physical Activity Breaks: Integrate short physical activity breaks during piano practice sessions. These breaks can include simple exercises like marching in place, standing toe touches, or arm circles. Encourage the student to perform these exercises every 15-20 minutes to prevent muscle fatigue and maintain focus.

  4. Dance and Play: Incorporate a fun dance and play activity into the lesson. Choose a lively piece of music and encourage the student to dance freely while playing the piano. This activity helps to develop coordination, rhythm, and overall physical fitness.

  5. Cool-down Stretches: End the lesson with a series of cool-down stretches to relax the muscles and prevent any potential stiffness or soreness. Include stretches for the fingers, wrists, arms, and back.
