Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to read and comprehend Halloween-themed texts, identify key story elements, and engage in creative writing activities related to Halloween.
Materials and Prep
- Halloween-themed books or short stories
- Paper and pencils
Activities
Start by reading a Halloween-themed book or short story together. Encourage active listening and ask comprehension questions throughout the reading.
After reading, discuss the key story elements such as characters, setting, problem, and solution. Ask the student to identify these elements in the story and explain their reasoning.
Next, have the student write a creative Halloween story using their imagination. Encourage them to incorporate the key story elements discussed earlier. Provide support and guidance as needed.
Once the story is written, have the student read it aloud and share it with you. Offer positive feedback and ask follow-up questions to further develop their comprehension skills.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
"In reading, we can learn about different holidays and celebrations. Today, we are going to explore Halloween through stories and our own creative writing."
"When we read a story, it's important to pay attention to the characters. They are the people or animals the story is about. Can you tell me who the main characters were in the Halloween story we read?"
"Another important element of a story is the setting. That's where and when the story takes place. Can you describe the setting of our Halloween story?"
"Every story has a problem that needs to be solved. What was the problem in our Halloween story? How did the characters solve it?"
"Now it's your turn to be a writer! I want you to create your own Halloween story. Think about the characters, setting, and problem you want to include. Let your imagination run wild!"
