Materials:

  • Blue Play-Doh (for oceans)
  • Various colors of Play-Doh (at least 6 different colors for continents)
  • Optional: A large piece of paper or play mat
  • Optional: A simple world map or globe for reference

Let's Explore Our World!

Hi Explorer! Today, we're going on an adventure to learn about our amazing planet, Earth! Our Earth is like a big ball covered in water and land. (Show globe or map if available, pointing to land and water). The really big pieces of land are called continents. There are seven of them! Can you say 'continents'?

Play-Doh Continent Fun!

Let's make our own world! First, let's make the big blue oceans. Spread the blue Play-Doh out on your paper or mat. This is all the water on Earth!

Now, let's make the continents! Using different colors of Play-Doh, let's try to make shapes that look like the big land pieces on our map. Don't worry about making them perfect, just have fun squishing and shaping!

As we make each shape, let's learn some names (Simplify for Kindergarten - maybe focus on 1-3):

  • This big one is called Africa! (Make a shape)
  • This long one is South America! (Make a shape)
  • This one where we live is North America! (Make a shape)
  • Let's make Asia, Europe, Australia, and Antarctica too! (Make shapes)

Place your Play-Doh continents onto your blue 'ocean'. Look! You've made a map of the world's continents!

Continent Chant!

(Sing to a simple tune like 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star')

Continents, oh continents,
Big lands on the map.
North America, South America,
Give your hands a clap!
Europe, Asia, Africa,
Australia down below,
Don't forget Antarctica,
Covered in ice and snow!

Wrap Up Questions:

  • What are the big pieces of land on Earth called? (Continents)
  • What color did we use for the water? (Blue)
  • Can you point to one continent we made?
  • Which part was more fun, making the oceans or the continents?

Great job exploring the continents today, super geographer!
