Grammar Style: Learning Parts of Speech with Taylor!

Hey Swiftie! Did you know that just like Taylor Swift uses different instruments and melodies to make amazing songs, writers use different types of words to make amazing sentences? Today, we're going to learn about three important types of words called Parts of Speech: Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives. And guess what? We'll use Taylor's world to help us!

1. Nouns: The Stars of the Show!

Nouns are words that name a person, place, thing, or idea. Think of them as the main characters or settings in a story or song!

  • Person: Taylor Swift, fan, singer, dancer
  • Place: Nashville, stage, New York, castle
  • Thing: guitar, microphone, dress, award, cat (like Olivia, Meredith, or Benjamin!)
  • Idea: love, music, friendship, dream

Example from Taylor: "Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play" ('Shake It Off'). Here, 'players' is a noun (person).

2. Verbs: The Action!

Verbs are words that show action or a state of being. They tell us what the noun is doing or being. They bring the energy, just like Taylor dancing on stage!

  • Action Verbs: sing, dance, write, play, jump, shake, run
  • State of Being Verbs: is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been

Example from Taylor: "But I keep cruising, can't stop, won't stop moving" ('Shake It Off'). 'Cruising' and 'moving' show action!

Example from Taylor: "She wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts" ('You Belong With Me'). 'Wears' is the action.

3. Adjectives: The Sparkle!

Adjectives are words that describe nouns or pronouns. They add detail and sparkle, like the glitter on Taylor's outfits! They answer questions like: What kind? How many? Which one?

  • Describing words: sparkly, loud, happy, sad, red, fearless, enchanted, famous, talented, thirteen

Example from Taylor: "Got that red lip, classic thing that you like" ('Style'). 'Red' and 'classic' describe the 'thing' (lipstick/style).

Example from Taylor: "It feels like a perfect night" ('22'). 'Perfect' describes the noun 'night'.

Activity Time: Swiftie Grammar Hunt!

Let's try finding these parts of speech! If you have Taylor Swift lyrics, great! If not, use these lines:

  1. "The haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate."
  2. "Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone." (Hint: 'alone' describes where they can be - it functions like an adjective here!)
  3. "Band-aids don't fix bullet holes." (Hint: 'bullet' describes the holes.)
  4. "She wears high heels, I wear sneakers." (Hint: 'high' describes heels.)

On your paper, write down the sentences. Then, identify and label the nouns (N), verbs (V), and adjectives (Adj) you can find, especially the bolded words. (We'll help with #1: haters (N), hate (V)).
