Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts related to addition and subtraction using Legos.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks (various colors and sizes)
- A large flat surface, such as a table or floor
- A small container to hold the Legos
- A pen and paper for recording
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction to Legos:
Start by introducing the student to the Lego bricks. Explain that Legos can be used to build different structures and that today they will be using them to learn about addition and subtraction.
- Counting with Legos:
Have the student count out a certain number of Lego bricks. Start with a small number (e.g., 5) and gradually increase the difficulty. Encourage the student to touch each Lego brick as they count to reinforce one-to-one correspondence.
- Addition with Legos:
Introduce addition by asking the student to combine two groups of Legos. For example, ask them to add 3 Legos to 2 Legos and count the total. Use visual aids by physically joining the groups of Legos together. Repeat with different numbers.
- Subtraction with Legos:
Introduce subtraction by starting with a group of Legos and asking the student to remove a certain number. For example, start with 5 Legos and ask them to subtract 2. Encourage the student to count how many Legos are left. Repeat with different numbers.
- Recording the Results:
Have the student practice recording their results on paper. Draw simple pictures or write the numbers to represent the addition and subtraction problems they solved using the Legos.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with Legos while learning about adding and taking away."
- "Let's count the Legos together. Can you touch each Lego as you count?"
- "Now, let's combine two groups of Legos. How many do we have in total?"
- "Great job! Now, let's try taking away some Legos. How many are left?"
- "Remember to record your answers on paper. You can draw pictures or write numbers."
