Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using Legos.

Materials and Prep

  • Legos (various sizes and colors)
  • Number cards (1-10)
  • Counting mat (optional)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Counting with Legos: Place a pile of Legos in front of you and count how many Legos there are. Use the number cards to match the correct number with the corresponding amount of Legos. Repeat this activity several times, gradually increasing the number of Legos.
  2. Addition with Legos: Take two different piles of Legos and count the number of Legos in each pile. Combine the two piles and count the total number of Legos. Use the number cards to write down the addition equation (e.g., 3 + 2 = 5).
  3. Subtraction with Legos: Start with a pile of Legos and remove a certain number of Legos. Count how many Legos are left and use the number cards to write down the subtraction equation (e.g., 6 - 2 = 4).
  4. Building Towers: Use Legos to build towers of different heights. Count the number of Legos in each tower and compare the heights of the towers. Practice counting and comparing numbers using the towers.

Preschool Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to have fun with Legos and learn about numbers."
  • "Let's count the Legos together. Can you tell me how many Legos there are?"
  • "Now, let's match the number cards with the correct number of Legos."
  • "Great job! Now, we will practice addition. We will combine two piles of Legos and count the total number."
  • "Next, we will practice subtraction. We will start with a pile of Legos and remove some. Then we will count how many are left."
  • "Lastly, we will build towers using Legos. We will count the number of Legos in each tower and compare their heights."
  • "Remember, math is all around us, even when we play with Legos. Let's have fun and learn at the same time!"
