Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to perform basic arithmetic operations using chicks as a fun theme.
Materials and Prep
- Counting chicks worksheet (available online or create your own)
- Small toy chicks or pictures of chicks
- Writing utensils
Activities
-
Counting Chicks:
Give your student a counting chicks worksheet. Have them count the number of chicks in each box and write the corresponding number.
-
Addition with Chicks:
Using small toy chicks or pictures of chicks, ask your student to solve simple addition problems. For example, show them 2 chicks and then add 3 more. Ask them to count the total number of chicks and write the answer.
-
Subtraction with Chicks:
Using the same toy chicks or pictures, ask your student to solve subtraction problems. For example, show them 5 chicks and then take away 2. Ask them to count how many chicks are left and write the answer.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Chicks are baby birds that eventually grow up to become adult birds."
- "We can count the number of chicks to know how many there are."
- "When we add chicks, we put them together to find the total number."
- "When we take away or subtract chicks, we are left with fewer chicks."
- "Mathematics helps us solve problems and understand numbers better."
