Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand the concept of atoms and their importance in chemistry.

Materials and Prep

  • Colored construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers or crayons
  • Clear tape
  • Optional: Small objects like buttons or beads

Before starting the lesson, make sure to have a basic understanding of what atoms are and their role in chemistry.

Activities

  1. Create Atom Collages

Give the toddler a sheet of colored construction paper and ask them to cut out different shapes from it. These shapes will represent the different parts of an atom. Once they have the shapes, they can glue them onto another sheet of construction paper to create their own atom collage. Encourage creativity and exploration!

  2. Draw Atom Models

Using markers or crayons, ask the toddler to draw their own atom models on a blank piece of paper. They can draw circles to represent the different parts of the atom and label them accordingly. If available, they can also use small objects like buttons or beads to represent the protons, neutrons, and electrons.

  3. Build Atom Structures

Using colored construction paper, help the toddler cut out circles to represent the different parts of an atom. Then, using clear tape, assist them in assembling the circles to create a 3D atom structure. This hands-on activity will provide a tactile experience and enhance their understanding of atoms.

Toddler Grade Talking Points

  • "Atoms are tiny building blocks that make up everything around us."
  • "Atoms are like puzzle pieces that fit together to create different things."
  • "Atoms have three main parts: protons, neutrons, and electrons."
  • "Protons have a positive charge, neutrons have no charge, and electrons have a negative charge."
  • "The protons and neutrons are in the center of the atom, called the nucleus, while the electrons move around the nucleus."
  • "Atoms can join together to form molecules, which are like teams of atoms working together."
  • "Understanding atoms helps scientists and chemists create new things and solve problems."
