Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the properties of wood and its importance in Earth Science.

Materials and Prep

  • Wood samples (different types)
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Notepad or paper

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of the different types of wood and their characteristics.

Activities

  1. Start by examining the different wood samples you have. Observe their color, texture, and weight. Take notes on your observations.
  2. Measure the length, width, and thickness of each wood sample using a ruler. Record the measurements.
  3. Compare the properties of the different wood samples. Which ones are lighter? Which ones are darker? Are there any noticeable differences in texture?
  4. Research the types of trees that the wood samples come from. Find out more about their growth patterns, natural habitats, and common uses.
  5. Write a short paragraph summarizing your findings and explaining why wood is an important resource in Earth Science.

Ninth Grade Talking Points

  • "Wood is a natural material that comes from trees. It is a renewable resource, meaning it can be replenished over time through sustainable forestry practices."
  • "Different types of wood have unique characteristics. Some are harder, while others are softer. This affects their durability and usefulness in various applications."
  • "Wood has been used by humans for thousands of years. It has been used for construction, furniture, paper, and many other purposes."
  • "Understanding the properties of wood is important in Earth Science because it helps us make informed decisions about sustainable forestry, conservation, and the impact of human activities on forests."
  • "By studying wood, we can also learn about the natural processes that occur in trees, such as growth patterns and adaptation to different environments."
