Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the significance of Dia de Los Muertos and explain some of its traditions.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper (various colors)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers or crayons
  • Printed pictures of calacas (skeletons) and marigold flowers (optional)

Prior to the lesson, familiarize yourself with the history and traditions of Dia de Los Muertos.

Activities

  1. Create a Calaca Collage:
  2. Using the construction paper, scissors, and glue, cut out and assemble your own calaca collage. Calacas are colorful skeletons often associated with Dia de Los Muertos. Be creative and make your calaca unique!

  3. Colorful Marigold Drawing:
  4. Using markers or crayons, draw a beautiful picture of marigold flowers. Marigolds are commonly used during Dia de Los Muertos as they are believed to guide the spirits of loved ones back to their families.
