Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply geometric concepts to create digital fantasy art.

Materials and Prep

  • Computer or tablet with drawing software (such as Adobe Photoshop or Procreate)
  • Digital drawing tablet or stylus (optional but recommended)
  • Basic understanding of shapes and angles

Activities

  1. Introduction to Geometric Shapes:

Start by discussing the basic geometric shapes commonly used in fantasy art, such as circles, squares, triangles, and polygons. Explain how these shapes can be combined and manipulated to create more complex forms.

  2. Applying Perspective:

Introduce the concept of perspective and how it can be used to create depth and realism in artwork. Demonstrate how to draw objects in one-point and two-point perspective, using geometric guidelines to establish the correct proportions.

  3. Creating Fantasy Landscapes:

Guide the student in using geometric shapes and perspective to design and draw their own fantasy landscapes. Encourage them to incorporate imaginative elements like floating islands, towering castles, or magical creatures.

  4. Adding Details and Textures:

Show the student how to add intricate details and textures to their artwork using geometric patterns. Discuss different techniques like hatching, stippling, or using repeating shapes to create interesting visual effects.

  5. Sharing and Feedback:

Allow the student to share their finished artwork with you or a peer. Provide constructive feedback on their use of geometry and offer suggestions for improvement.

Eighth Grade Talking Points

  • "Geometry is not just about measuring angles and sides, it can also be a powerful tool for creating visually stunning artwork."
  • "By understanding geometric shapes and perspective, you can bring depth and realism to your fantasy art."
  • "Fantasy landscapes often incorporate elements that defy the laws of physics, but using geometric guidelines can help make them appear more believable."
  • "Experimenting with different textures and patterns can add a unique touch to your artwork, and geometric shapes can be a great starting point for creating them."
  • "Sharing your artwork with others allows you to receive valuable feedback and learn from different perspectives. Don't be afraid to ask for input!"
