Lesson Activities:
1. Introduction: Who's Who? (5 minutes)
- Ask the student: "Who is someone famous or important you admire? Why?"
- Explain: "Today, we're going to learn about someone amazing by reading their biography. A biography is the true story of a person's life written by someone else."
- Show the chosen biography book. Look at the cover and table of contents together.
2. Fact Detective - Reading Mission (15-20 minutes)
- Explain: "Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to become a Fact Detective! As you read the first section or chapter of the biography (decide on a stopping point together), your job is to hunt for important facts about this person's life."
- Model finding a fact (e.g., birthdate, where they grew up, a major event).
- Have the student read the assigned section independently or read it aloud together.
- Encourage the student to use a highlighter or colored pencil to gently mark important facts they find in the book, or jot them down on scratch paper immediately.
3. Collect the Clues - Fact Listing (10 minutes)
- Provide the notebook and pencil.
- Ask the student: "Detective, let's gather our clues! Look back at the facts you marked or noted down."
- Have the student write down at least 5 key facts they discovered in their notebook. Label the page with the person's name. Help guide them if they are unsure what constitutes a 'key' fact (focus on who, what, where, when).
4. Crack the Case - Summarizing (10 minutes)
- Explain: "Great detective work! Now, let's summarize what we learned from this part of the person's life. A summary tells the most important points in just a few sentences."
- Using the list of facts, guide the student to write 2-3 sentences summarizing the key information they learned from the section they read. For example: "[Person's Name] was born in [Year/Place]. As a child, they loved [Activity]. One important thing that happened was [Event]."
5. Case Closed - Wrap Up (5 minutes)
- Ask the student: "What was the most interesting fact you learned today? Was anything surprising?"
- Briefly review what a biography is and what it means to find facts.
- Praise their detective skills! You can put a 'Case Closed' stamp or sticker in their notebook if available.
Optional Extension Activities:
- Draw a portrait of the person based on the book's description or cover.
- Start a simple timeline in the notebook, adding the first few facts.
- Read another section and repeat the fact-finding and summarizing process.
