Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and analyze a text related to going hunting, while improving their reading comprehension skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper
  • Access to a hunting-related text (e.g., an article, a short story, or a book)
  • Dictionary (optional)

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has a basic understanding of reading comprehension strategies, such as making predictions, summarizing, and making connections to prior knowledge.

Activities

  1. Begin by discussing with the student their interest in hunting. Ask them what they already know about hunting and what they would like to learn.
  2. Provide the student with the hunting-related text and ask them to read it silently. Encourage them to underline or highlight any unfamiliar words or phrases.
  3. After reading, have the student discuss the main ideas and key details of the text. Ask them to summarize the text in their own words.
  4. Engage the student in a guided discussion about the text. Ask open-ended questions to encourage critical thinking and deeper understanding, such as:
    • What are the benefits and drawbacks of hunting?
    • How does hunting affect the environment?
    • What are some safety precautions hunters should take?
    • Do you think hunting is a necessary skill in today's society? Why or why not?
  5. Finally, ask the student to write a short reflection on their thoughts about hunting, based on the reading and the discussion. Encourage them to support their opinions with evidence from the text.
